Kos is one of the most popular destinations of Greece, well known for its sandy long beaches; being also the island with the highest touristic density of the country (i.e. analogy of number of tourists/visitors to number of permanent inhabitants). The economic development of the island is being focused in the 3S (Sun-Sea-Sand) touristic model, accounting for more than 60% of the local GDP. Beaches form of about 75% of the islands shoreline, whereas 54 out of 65 beaches in total are fronting important touristic infrastructure assets. From the above, it’s evident that Kos beaches are the most significant natural and economic resource of the island, enhancing the need for beach protection and appropriate coastal management, especially under the prism of the projected by the scientific community climate change, which is expected to significantly impact sea level rise and changes in extreme storminess, accelerating beach erosion processes.
Pilot Beach - Marmari
Marmari beach is located at the northern part of the island, 15 kilometers at the west of Kos town. It’s a sandy beach characterized by high length where lots of leisure/touristic activities are concentrated .
